Trees and Shrubs Around Diamond Tail Ranch
Many of the plant species of Diamond Tail Estates have been collected, pressed, identified and mounted into an herbarium of six books available at the Office. Together the plants here inhabit ecosystems as diverse as wetlands, arroyos and seasonal washes, high rocky overlooks, a rolling savannah of piñon and juniper woodlands with scattered shrubs along with other roadside plants more commonly associated with the nearby prairies. When the desert wildflowers, trees and shrubs, grasses, cacti bloom here in the spring through summer and fall there is a certain magic to it all. Herein are some ways to encounter these diverse 160+ plant species of Diamond Tail Estates.
•
There are at least 30 kinds of trees and shrubs on Diamond Tail. These range from the sturdy piñon pine to ancient rounded junipers in a rolling savanna woodland. Then there are all the silvery gray sages, chamisas and saltbushes, some with wild yellow flowers. There are a few cottonwoods coming up along with some dryland willows. With two kinds of yuccas, two hardy oaks species, and Navaho Tea bushes are scattered throughout.
